THE BEAUTY OF WEATHERING STEEL

A finish that evolves with time

1 NEW CORTEN STEEL

0 - 1 MONTH

1 - 3 MONTHS

Exposure to moisture and oxygen causes the surface to oxidise. A light orange-brown rust layer begins to form, often appearing uneven as the natural weathering process gets underway.

Unlike conventional painted steel, Corten develops a protective weathered surface when exposed to suitable environmental conditions. Its appearance gradually evolves from warm orange tones to deeper, earthy browns, giving every installation its own individual character.

With thoughtful design, appropriate detailing and expert fabrication, Corten steel offers an attractive, low-maintenance solution for a wide variety of architectural and landscaping applications.

2 INITIAL RUSTING

Supplied with a dark grey, unweathered surface. Corten steel contains alloying elements, including copper, chromium and nickel, which enable a protective patina to develop naturally over time.

3 - 6 MONTHS

The rust layer gradually thickens and becomes more uniform. Variations in colour and texture are common as the developing patina creates the distinctive appearance of Corten steel.

3 DEVELOPING PATINA

6 - 12 MONTHS

The surface becomes denser and more stable, with colours deepening into rich reddish-brown tones. The protective patina continues to develop, giving the steel its characteristic warmth and texture.

4 MATURING PATINA

1 - 2 YEARS

A durable, tightly adherent patina becomes established, helping to protect the underlying steel against further corrosion. With suitable exposure and drainage, the surface requires minimal maintenance.

5 STABLE PATINA

LONG-TERM APPEARANCE

2 + YEARS

The patina continues to mature gradually, developing deeper earthy tones and a beautifully textured finish. When correctly specified and installed, Corten steel can provide decades of distinctive architectural character.
